An illegal immigrant is recovering after a complicated helicopter rescue from a remote area of the Baboquivari Mountains.
A Pima County Sheriff's Office dispatcher got a 9-1-1 call Friday from a Guatemalan man. He said he and his wife had illegally crossed the border two days prior but his wife had fallen about 45 feet and was unable to stand or walk.
BORSTAR and Customs and Border Protection's Office of Air and Marine coordinated efforts for a rescue mission using a Blackhawk helicopter. When the team arrived, they discovered the actual scene of the accident was approximately halfway up Baboquivari Peak. Because of the terrain, BORSTAR agents deployed from the helicopter and hiked about a quarter mile to reach the couple.
Agents found the woman had a broken leg. They got her into the chopper using a special technique and BORSTAR agents specially trained to conduct the rope extraction.
