Sewer rates may rise 5% in 2013

HAMILTON COUNTY, OH (FOX19) - The cost of using the bathroom is expected to rise in 2013.

On Wednesday, a public hearing was held to discuss sewer rates during a Hamilton County Commissioner meeting.

Officials said rates may jump 5% next year for the 800,000 customers of the Metropolitan Sewer District of Greater Cincinnati.

The average yearly sewer bill was $716.80 in 2012, and would increase to $752.60 in 2013.

However, commissioners still need to approve the 2013 rates and are scheduled to vote on December 19th.

Commissioners say the federal government mandated a $3.2 billion sewer upgrade, and the rate increase would be to fund the upgrade.

Since 2006, Metropolitan Sewer District's rates have gone up 85%.
