Sundays Off

Lawmakers correct an error giving workers a weekend day off

State lawmakers in Virginia have quickly voted to fix a legislative blunder giving workers Saturdays or Sundays off as a day of rest. Earlier this year, Virginia lawmakers mistakenly passed a law saying Virginia businesses must give employees the day off on their Sabbath if they request it. The error alarmed many businesses with weekend or round-the-clock shifts to cover, such as factories, stores, utilities and restaurants. The law was to take effect during the July Fourth weekend, but a judge blocked it with a 90-day emergency order.
