NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

The father of the man who is suspected of shooting and killing 26 people including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School and his own mother at their home in Newtown Friday morning released a statement.

According to reports, 20-year-old Adam Lanza was not voluntarily let into the building, and may have shot out a window near the locked front door in order to make his way inside.

State police has not officially confirmed that Lanza was the shooter.

Adam Lanza's father Peter Lanza released a statement on the shooting Saturday evening.

"Our hearts go out to the families and friends who lost loved ones and to all those who were injured. Our family is grieving along with all those who have been affected by this enormous tragedy," Peter Lanza said in the statement. "No words can truly express how heartbroken we are. We are in a state of disbelief and trying to find whatever answers we can. We too are asking why."

In the statement, Peter Lanza said his family has "cooperated fully" with the investigation by law enforcement and "will continue to do so."

"Like so many of you, we are saddened, but struggling to make sense of what has transpired," he said.
