KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
Authorities are investigating a suspicious death after a man's body was found Sunday inside a Kansas City, KS, home.
Police said the body was found about 2 p.m. in the 3000 block of North 115th Street.
Friends say they couldn't reach the victim all week, so one stopped by to check on him, and what they saw inside made him run for help.
The man's name hasn't been released, but police said he was 69 years old and had lived in the house for years.
Henry Dean spent a lot of time at the KCK house over the past 30 years, and he thought his friend who owned the place would live forever.
Dean said the man was in great shape, always out working in his yard and making sure friends had work when they needed it, too.
"He was a very, very good friend of mine, and he helped me out an awful lot," Dean said.
So when Dean learned what had happened there, he had to come see for himself and pay his respects.
"I just got this feeling of 'how could this happen to such a good guy?'" Dean said.
It's still unclear exactly what happened. Police are calling the death suspicious, but saying little else.
"There was a body laying on the floor. It looked like someone sleeping with a blanket over him. The head and everything were covered. Just his feet were sticking out from under the blanket," Dean said.
Investigators originally thought it was a home invasion, but say they've now ruled that out.
"Something didn't seem right when I walked in. There were some, I believe, boxes sitting on the floor, that looked like they had been gone through, and that seemed out of place," Dean said.
Dean said the victim always kept his house in perfect order, and above all he was private, and had just had this new fence put up.
"He was very much into protecting himself and his belongings," Dean said.
But it appears it wasn't enough. Now friends are waiting for answers and mourning the man they know they'll miss.
The Kansas City, KS, Police Department's Major Case Unit is encouraging anyone with information regarding the incident to please call 913-573-6020 or the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS (8477).
