NEW HANOVER COUNTY, NC (WECT) - Four people accused of having a connection in the death of 19-year-old Joshua Proutey were in court Monday.
District Attorney Ben David asked the judge they all be denied bond. David said even though there was only one bullet, all four were plotting to rob victims.
Proutey, 19, was shot Thursday night while heading to his car after working an event at the Community Arts Center on Second and Orange Streets.
According to the News and Observer, a celebration service will be held in honor of Proutey Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. at Cleveland Community Church in Clayton, NC. The family will receive friends from noon until 3:00 p.m.
According to the county jail records, Jasmine Nikole Dottin, 19, Christopher Daniel Cromartie, 23, and Quintel Raheem Grady, 22, are all charged with:
• first degree murder
• robbery with a dangerous weapon
• conspiracy to commit a robbery with dangerous weapon
Dottin and Cromartie are also charged with attempted burglary. Additionally, Dottin is charged with failure to appear on a misdemeanor charge.
Daniel Henry, 17, is charged with robbery with first degree burglary and first degree murder. Henry was a student at Ashley High School, but lives in Leland. He said in court Monday that his grandmother drives him to school. Henry had a pending charge of communicating threats to Leon Henry, his brother who lives in Wilmington.
Henry said Tuesday he had no idea the
robbery would turn fatal, and that Quintell Grady bought the revolver that
killed Proutey hours before the
shooting, and is the one who pulled the trigger.
Dottin has lived in the area for nine years with her grandmother, but now lives in Leland with Henry.
According to the DA, Grady had priors on his record including under 18 robbery with a weapon, fleeing to allude arrest and possession of a stolen motor vehicle.
David believes Cromartie, Dottin and Henry joined forces to rob a home on South Churchill Road in the Forest Hills area. He said a ladder had been pushed on the side of the house and a door had been tampered with. David said they left after the couple woke up.
According to police, the group stalked and followed a woman later in the night. David said the woman knew she was being followed so she went into a gated yard to call 911, but ultimately never did.
About 20 minutes later, according to David, Grady approached Proutey and demanded money. He says Prouety pulled out $10 to hand over, but asked to keep it. According to David, Proutey was ordered back into his car, but froze, so Grady shot him.
David said the group took Proutey's cell phone, two $5 bills and a sandwich from Jimmie Johns that Proutey had bought for dinner.
Police say surveillance video from a nearby gas stations shows the four people using the $10 they had stolen to buy gas.
David calls Proutey's death a "senseless act of violence" - it could have been anyone.
The Wilmington Police Department is expected to hold a press conference about these crimes Monday at 1 p.m.
