'Layaway angels' spreading Christmas cheer

BLUE ASH, OH (FOX19) - They are called "layaway angels" - strangers who pay off layaway gifts at stores around the country.

K-Mart in Blue Ash is no different.

Employees say they have had dozens of layaway angels coming in since Thanksgiving. On Sunday, a woman paid $1,000 and layaway items for multiple strangers.

Assistant manager Allison Beel says this year layaway gifts have increased.  Beel says it's a mixture of the economy and the awareness of the layaway system.

She says every time a layaway angel comes into their store it makes their day to tell the parents of those who bought the gifts that the bill is already taken care of.
