CLIFTON, OH (FOX19) -

University of Cincinnati senior QB Brendon Kay was granted an extra season of eligibility by the NCAA on Monday.

The announcement comes after Kay requested for an extension of eligibility waiver.

He suffered multiple injuries during his first four seasons at Cincinnati, and missed games in 2008 and 2011. After looking at medical documentation and the granting of a medical hardship waiver for 2011 by the conference office, the NCAA staff approved a 2013-14 season for Kay.

"I'm excited," he said. "I can't thank Maggie McKinley and Bob Mangine enough for their efforts in helping me through this process. This University has given me so much and I'm grateful for the opportunity".

He replaced Munchie Legaux last season and helped Cincinnati win a share of the Big East title and a spot in the Belk Bowl.

He went 70 of 113 for 966 yards and six touchdowns after replacing Legaux.

Entering the season, he was limited to six career games due to injury.

Kay is expected to start in the Belk Bowl on December 27th against Duke.
