Butler Co. Sheriffs being proactive about school safety - Cincinnati News, FOX19-WXIX TV

Local law enforcement stepping up school patrols

BUTLER COUNTY, OH (FOX19) -

Sending children to school on Monday had a very different feel after what took place in Connecticut. Law enforcement in one local community have already changed their approach safety services.

The Butler County Sheriff's Office is trying to be proactive by stepping up patrols around area schools.

"We immediately put officers on alert, but we didn't need to. Most of them are parents, grandparents, but we want them out there as much as they can be," said Butler County Sheriff Richard Jones.

Jones has also spoke out about adding protection inside schools. He sent a letter to Governor Kasich asking to support the idea of putting an armed guard at the door of every school.

"It may not stop it, but I think its one avenue. One additional person that they have to go through that's armed and trained," said Jones.

The sheriff also said that budget cuts in the school system have not only affected the overall education of students, but also the security at school buildings.

Jones approved overtime through the holiday break in order to patrol schools more frequently in the coming weeks.
