OVER THE RHINE, OH (FOX19) - The Freestore Foodbank began distributing food to families in need on Wednesday.
The organization expects to distribute boxes of holiday meals to at least 40,000 people around the Tri-State this season.
On Wednesday, the Freestore helped more than 5,000 people.
Each household receives a box of food, a bag of produce and either a chicken or turkey, depending on the family's size.
"Thanksgiving's an indication that we're going to see about an 8% to 10% increase year over year, in terms of folks that are coming to our food room to get their holiday meal for their family", said Kurt Reiber, President of the Freestore Foodbank.
The Freestore Foodbank provided food to more than 8,500 families on Thanksgiving.
The distribution begins at 8 a.m. at the Freestore Foodbank Customer Connection Center, located at 112 East Liberty Street, and runs through Friday.
