NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -
Support from surrounding communities continues to grow for the people of Newtown in the wake of a mass shooting inside an elementary school last Friday.
Memorials have been popping up across Newtown and in most, if not all, of Connecticut's 169 cities and towns.
Thousands upon thousands of residents have been flocking to Newtown to pay their respects for the 26 people, including 20 children, that were shot to death inside Sandy Hook Elementary School. With them, thousands of people have placed flowers, candles, cards and even stuffed animals in the heart of the town.
The one week anniversary of the tragedy is Friday, and Gov. Dannel Malloy signed a proclamation stating that Connecticut will observe a Day of Mourning as a result of what took place in the quiet Connecticut town.
A moment of silence will be held at 9:30 a.m. - the time the rampage began.
Malloy has asked all buildings in the state and across the country to ring bells 26 times - one for each victim - and have staff and/or clergy available to anyone that needs to speak about what took place.
As time goes on, community spirit is getting stronger.
Eyewitness News visited Nonnewaug High School where students there are trying to help in any way they can.
Students began selling bracelets and ribbons, and to show just how strong the community and state is, more than 900 have been sold as of Thursday, and the bracelets haven't even been made yet.
"Nonnewaug is a community and we want to come together and help out neighboring towns and we have students here from Newtown because this is an agricultural school, we have students from other towns and we wanted to have our part," said Nonnewaug student Kevin Keane.
Surrounding businesses have decided to sell the bracelets, along with Nonnewaug and Newtown high schools.
"We just want to show the community in Woodbury and Newtown that here in Woodbury at Nonnewaug that we care about them," Keane said.
Sales from ribbons have topped $1,000 so far.
"We need to cope with this as an entire community and come together for the families and they need our love and support, and it's amazing to see the students come together as a whole," said Nicole Sales, who is a junior at Nonnewaug High School.
And the students said it's the least they can do for a town that means so much to them.
"It's hard to process what happened knowing people from the town and it's something no one could ever thought would happen," Keane said.
The money raised will go to the United Way to help the victims families and could also pay for a memorial.
