Petition started to rename street in honor of Victoria Soto

Victoria Soto Victoria Soto
STRATFORD, CT (WFSB) -

A petition on the website change.org to rename a Stratford street in honor of a teacher killed inside a Newtown elementary school is gaining some momentum.

Victoria Soto was shot and killed inside Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown on Dec. 14.

Adam Lanza, 20, shot and killed his mother before going to Sandy Hook where he killed 20 students and six adults before killing himself.

The petition calls for the Stratford Town Council to rename North Parade Street to Victoria Soto Way.

North Parade runs in front of Stratford High School, which is where Soto graduated from.

After the tragic Newtown school shooting, resident Christopher Barbee had the idea to try to get North Parade Street re-named for Soto.

"A week of sadness after and it just broke me down, and a lot of Facebook posts about this and I thought it would be nice for our town to do something, anything to memorialize her," he said.

As of Wednesday morning, more than 2,500 people signed the petition.

People from all over the country signed it and left comments. Tara Domres from North Dakota wrote that she was a true hero and Lynn Rogers from Michigan said "she was very courageous."

"This will keep her precious memory alive," Theresa Hemperly of Austin, TX wrote on the petition.

Stratford Mayor John Harkins said before he makes any decisions, they want to talk to the Soto family.

"Anything that's going to be done in Stratford whether is the naming of the street or a building," he said. "We want to get the permission of the family and get their support behind any type of dedication in memory of their daughter."

Hawkins said he will know more in the coming days.
