Snow brings big business to retailers, removal companies

CLARK COUNTY, IN (WAVE) - Landscapers and retailers admit there's no business like snow business.

For local hardware stores, the snowfall means an influx of customers after the essentials, and landscapers are landing lucrative snow removal jobs during what's typically a slow off-season.

Sleet and snow doesn't bother Mike Pourteau, owner of Hometown Handyman. "It's tough work but it's good income. It's a lot of hurry up and wait, but we're thankful for the additional workload,"

Pourteau said he hopes business this year will be better than last year. Some snow removal businesses were down about 75 percent because of Kentuckiana's almost snowless winter.

At Tanner's Hardware in Henryville, Indiana, a light coating of snow dusted the entrance and parking lot. It may be a nuisance for some, but to staff it's manna from heaven. The store's owner admitted he can't compete with the big box stores, but he will still sell out of salt and shovels.

"Most people don't like it, but it's good for our business," Tanner's Hardware owner Sam McMinoway said. "I probably have 40 to 50 bags. Every single one will be gone by this afternoon."

Some workers said they'd be pulling all-nighters to make sure people aren't slipping and sliding. "We'll probably be out 24 hours. I've been out as much as 48," Pourteau said.
