(FOX19) - A former University of Cincinnati president passed away on Wednesday.
Henry R. Winkler, served as UC's 23rd president, and remains the only UC graduate to ever hold the university's chief executive office, according to officials.
"Dr. Winkler will be remembered for his leadership of UC during its first years as a state university," said UC President Santa J. Ono, "...He holds a special place in our collective heart as a kind and gracious member of the UC family who was always a welcome face at university events."
UC revealed Winkler moved to Cincinnati and lived with an uncle and aunt after high school, working to earn UC tuition. He eventually finished his degree, graduating Phi Beta Kappa.
He was selected to serve as president in December of 1977, at the age of 61.
Winkler is remembered by UC staff for his "outstanding reputation as a scholar, educator and administrator."
He wrote or edited seven books in his lifetime and maintained associations with several established college organizations.
