MILAN, IN (FOX19) -
Indiana State Police say the death of a woman in Milan, Ind. is being investigated as a homicide.
Police say a 911 call was made by a family member who discovered the body of Nancy Hershman at about 1 a.m. Sunday morning.
Paramedics arrived at the Hershman's home at 607 West Ellis Street and pronounced her dead.
Sgt. Noel Houze with the Indiana State police says details of the crime scene are being kept under wraps.
"Investigators aren't releasing any, you know, what they suspect may have been involved in the death. They don't want to speculate on anything," said Houze.
Investigators are saying that an autopsy was performed Monday morning on Hershman, and her death is being investigated as a homicide. Police are not released any details as to how she died.
Milan school board member Ted Amberger says Hershman was a good friend to just about everyone.
"Nancy was a very good person, I mean she was a friendly person, very well liked in the community. She got along with everybody and just nice to be around," said Amberger.
Amberger says Hershman drove a school bus for years.
"Nancy was a big part of the Milan community," he said. "She was active, I know , in her church. She was a school bus driver for us for many years. I know she drove a special education bus and then she also drove a regular school bus."
As if driving a school bus didn't keep her busy enough, Amberger says Hershman was also an emergency medical technician with the local rescue squad.
"I used to run with her on the rescue 30. She was an EMT for many years here in the town of Milan," he said.
Amberger says being an EMT was a job Hershman apparently loved and supported by writing grants.
"When I used to work with her on rescue 30 she did do a lot of grants and different things for rescue 30 to help get different equipment," he said.
Hershman's service to the community is just one of the reasons Hershman is going to be missed and investigators are looking to the coroner for some answers.
Police say an autopsy is scheduled for Monday and the coroner may be able to provide some preliminary information.
Nancy Hershman was born and raised in Milan, but her death is now the subject of an Indiana State Police investigation and a heavy burden on the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
