WASHINGTON, DC (FOX19) -
John Boehner has kept his job as Speaker of the House, despite rumors in Washington that he was in danger of losing re-election.
Boehner (R-West Chester) was the only Congressman nominated by the Republicans for the position. He was elected via a voice as the 113th Congress convened.
"Honored to have been elected by my colleagues to continue serving as Speaker of the House for the 113th Congress," Boehner tweeted on Thursday afternoon.
Nancy Pelosi was re-elected as House Minority Leader.
It would have taken just 17 GOP dissenters to force a second ballot. Boehner received 220 votes, with Pelosi receiving 192. Ten other Representatives received three or fewer votes.
Rep. Thomas Massie, the newly-elected representative from Kentucky's fourth district, which includes Northern Kentucky, voted for Rep. Justin Amash from Michigan.
Boehner has faced a bruising the past few weeks with his fractious GOP caucus, but seemed poised to win another term as speaker. He mollified angry Republicans from New York and New Jersey on Wednesday, with the promise of a vote Friday on $9 billion of the storm relief package and another vote on the remaining $51 billion on January 15th.
Xavier University political science Professor Mack Mariani said Boehner is the target of a lot of republican anger. "He's taking a lot of the heat for the fact that republicans are unhappy, I think, for the position they're in after the 2012 elections."
Mariani said Boehner is having to deal with competing factions. "The speaker finds himself kind of caught between the more conservative members of his caucus and the more moderate members of his caucus. That's true of most speakers, I think. It's particularly true now in the era where the stakes are very high with some of the decisions being made."
One decision that's been roundly criticized by fellow republicans is Boehner's failure to call up the $60 billion hurricane Sandy relief package for a vote.
However, Hamilton County GOP Chairman Alex Triantafilou said the criticism is unwarranted. "Totally unfair. The Sandy bill did not pass because it was loaded with wasteful pork spending and conservatives ought to stand against that."
Nonetheless, other republicans, like Kentucky congressman Tom Massie are not impressed with Boehner's leadership. Massie said, "I didn't vote for the speaker today in fact so I felt like a vote for the current speaker was a vote for business as usual and I think we need to change things."
