(RNN) - President Barack Obama will take the oath of office twice in 2013 – once in a private ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 20 and again on the following day at the U.S. Capitol.

The president is taking the oath twice because this year's inauguration day will fall on a Sunday. The 20th Amendment of the Constitution states that inauguration date is Jan. 20 at noon.

However, inaugurations are usually not held on Sundays because courts and other public offices and institutions are closed.

By taking the oath of office twice, Obama will be following the tradition of most presidents whose inaugurations fell on the first day of the week.

President Ronald Reagan took the oath in a private ceremony on Sunday, Jan. 20, 1985, and then again publicly on Monday Jan. 21, according to the Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee (PIC) announced Obama will use the Robinson Family Bible for the private swearing in ceremony. The Bible was a gift from Michelle Obama's father, Fraser Robinson, III, to his mother LaVaughn Delores Robinson on Mother's Day 1958.

During the public swearing-in ceremony Obama will use the inaugural Bible of President Abraham Lincoln paired with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s traveling Bible stacked together.

"President Obama is honored to use these Bibles at the swearing-in ceremonies," said Steve Kerrigan, president and CEO of PIC, in a statement. "On the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and 150th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation, this historic moment is a reflection of the extraordinary progress we've made as a nation."
