HARRISON, OH (FOX19) - Some local students used a school project to join the space race on Thursday.
Students at Harrison Junior School attached a camera to a weather balloon and sent it into space.
The camera was insulated in a Styrofoam cooler and went into the thermosphere, the outermost shell of the Earth's atmosphere.
There's also a GPS attached to the balloon, so the students can recover the camera. They won't know how the pictures turned out until the equipment is back.
Students say the camera is set to take pictures every seven seconds, and flight time was planned for about five hours in length.
