Diet drinks linked to depression

Posted: Updated:

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) – A new study has linked sweetened beverages, especially diet drinks, to an increased risk for depression.

Researchers tracked the beverage consumption of over 250,000 adults, then followed up ten years later. The study found that people who drank more than four cans of soda, iced tea or punch a day were at least 30 percent more likely to develop depression than those who drank none.

The risk was found to be even greater for people who drank diet versions of these beverages.

It's important to note this study only suggests a link and does not prove cause and effect, or indicate sweetened drinks lead to the condition.
