Seminar aims to keep TN places of worship safe

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Faith and safety came together Wednesday night in Nashville as the American Muslim Advisory Council teamed up with the Metro Police Department for a seminar at the Islamic Center of Nashville.

They want to increase safety and security at all places of worship, and they invited members of churches, synagogues and mosques to come hear what the officers have to say.

Tragedies like the Newtown, CT, school massacre and last year's mass shooting at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin led organizers to plan the event.

But incidents closer to home, like mosque vandalism in Nashville and Murfreesboro, are often on their minds.

"There are some ignorant people. We worry in the back of our hearts that there might be some backlash. God forbid anything happens again," said Amir Arain, with the Islamic Center of Nashville.

The council plans to invite more religious groups to join the partnership and hold additional seminars on keeping their places of worship safe.
