NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -
A Bellevue mother surrendered to Metro police Friday after being indicted on first-degree murder, child neglect and child endangerment charges in connection to the death of her 17-month-old daughter.
Police said Neena Costanza, 21, was at work when her daughter, Eloise, died from head trauma in July.
Investigators believe the injuries were caused by Costanza's boyfriend, Jacob Hughes, 22.
Hughes was arrested and charged with murder and aggravated child abuse July 26.
According to a news release, police believe that Costanza knew of Hughes' alleged abusive behavior but left her daughter with him nonetheless.
Costanza was released on $50,000 bond Friday.
Hughes remains in jail.
Neena Costanza has retained Nashville attorney David Raybin to represent her.
In an email in direct response to the police press release, Raybin denied that Costanza neglected her child in any fashion. He said in the statement that her baby was murdered by her boyfriend while she was at work and she had no way to know he would do such a thing.
Raybin said the allegations against Costanza take child neglect to a whole new level and are simply not true, and he added that the defense will enter a not guilty plea when the matter comes to court.
