Gun stores running low on popular ammunition

People who have managed to buy a gun despite the high demand and empty shelves at many area gun stores may now be facing a new problem.

Gun stores around Nashville are running out of ammunition.

It's flying off the shelves so quickly, some store owners are putting limits on what customers can buy - if there is anything left to sell in the first place.

The Nashville Gun Shop receives about 100 calls a day from customers with the same problem.

In 2013, the gold rush is on .22 caliber bullets.

"We cannot get any. We probably have several hundred thousands on order," said Demir Demirhisar, owner of Nashville Gun Shop.

Demirhisar said he's sold out of standard .22 and .380 ammunition, and he's so low on 9 mm and .40 caliber bullets he's only selling them to customers who purchase firearms.

"It doesn't matter if I have a business. If I don't have a product to sell, I have no business," Demirhisar said.

Academy Sports & Outdoors in Cool Springs is rationing its supply, allowing customers three boxes of ammunition per day and only one box of each caliber.

They did it to prevent customers from wiping them out before they get their next shipment.

Store owners said the manufacturers can't keep up with the demand, so some ammo is going for nearly twice what it's worth - if you're lucky enough to find it.

Academy Sports & Outdoors has also sold out of .22 caliber ammo at the Cool Springs location, and some customers have even lined up to wait for the store to open this week to get their hands on other calibers.
