3-year-old found wandering in the middle of traffic
WICKLIFFE, OH (WOIO) -
Wickliffe Police confirm that a three-year-old was found wandering in the middle of the street on Euclid Avenue.
Authorities say that at 10:51 a.m., a driver jumped out of her car, picked the child up and took the little boy to an nearby auto body shop to call police.
The driver says that she gave the child her socks and coat while she waited for the police to arrive.
Police say that the child was wearing socks and oddly enough, ankle weights.
After a little investigative work, police learned that the child lived in an apartment across the street from the auto body shop he was taken to. Apparently the boy's babysitter had fallen asleep and the child was outside for twenty minutes before he was found. The police learned that the boy was headed to an aunt's house who lived nearby.
The child was left in the custody of the babysitter and no charges were filed.
Chief Randy Ice said that a report was sent to Job and Family services, who at their discretion will refer the case to juvenile court if they find it necessary and at that time charges will be filed, if deemed appropriate.
Although the driver does not agree with the police's protocol in handling the incident, she is thankful that the child wasn't hurt.
