UT Prof Heads to Washington

UT professor tapped for State Department fellowship.

A University of Toledo chemistry professor has been picked for a fellowship that brings science and technology experts to the US State Department. Bruce Averill is one of five Jefferson Science Fellows, a pilot program in which he'll spend a year in Washington and then continue as a State Department consultant for the next five years. Averill says the program's goal is to increase technical expertise in the State Department. His exact assignment hasn't been determined but the 56-year-old professor says it could range from scientific consulting for the United Nations cultural agency to acting as a science liaison to the European Union.
