NEW ORLEANS, LA (FOX19) -
The Baltimore Ravens defeated the San Francisco 49ers 34-31 to become Super Bowl champions.
The 49'ers hopes of a huge comeback ran out on a 4th-down non-call when a Baltimore defender put his hands on a receiver attempting to make the touchdown that would have put San Francisco ahead.
With Baltimore up 34-29, Baltimore's punter surprised S.F. by taking an intentional safety, giving up two points but taking 8 seconds off the clock, and eliminating the risk of a punt from the end zone.
Joe Flacco threw three touchdown passes to help the Baltimore ravens take a 21-6 halftime lead. He went 13 for 20 with 192 yards and three scores before halftime. As Flacco flourished, the 49ers struggled. San Francisco turned the ball over twice in a 5-minute span in the second quarter.
Jacoby Jones set the tone for the Ravens in the second half. Jones' 109 yard kick return to start the second half was the longest in NFL history.
However, the Ravens' dominance was put on hold after the power went out in the Superdome early in the third quarter. Teams remained on the field with players stretching and trying to stay warmed up.
As play resumed, the momentum shifted. Michael Crabtree caught a 31 yard pass from Colin Kaepernick for a third quarter touchdown cutting the Ravens lead to 15. Following the 78-yard San Francisco drive, the 49ers defense sacked Joe Flacco on a third down play forcing a punt.
San Francisco's Ted Ginn Jr. returned the punt inside the Ravens' 30-yard line. A Frank Gore short run cut the 49ers's deficit to eight points.
The Ravens led 28-23 going into the fourth quarter.
