Kenzie's Closet non-profit kicks off 2013 prom season

Some local girls got a head-start on prom season this year.

Kenzie's Closet in O'Bryonville held their first 'shopping day' of 2013 on Tuesday. The dress shopping boutique is a non-profit which provides complete prom outfits to underprivileged high school girls.

This year marks the 8th annual 'prom season'. Junior and senior high school girls are referred to Kenzie's Closet from their school principal, counselor or social service agency. On their scheduled 'shopping day', the students meet up with a volunteer private shopper to find the perfect dress for the big night, at no cost.

The non-profit has helped more than 2,230 students in the past seven years, from area inner-city, suburban and rural schools. Organizers expect nearly 600 girls to participate this prom season alone.

The annual event is supported by grassroots volunteers, individual donations of prom dresses and monetary donations.

Kenzie's Closet is named after Makena 'Kenzie' Anne Comisar, a St. Ursula student killed in a single-car accident before she was able to attend her senior prom in 2002.
