Allegations of sexual assault, beatings and inadequate medical care at Ohio's only juvenile prison for girls have prompted two independent investigations. The Covington-based Children's Law Center is conducting one investigation of the Scioto Juvenile Correctional Facility near Columbus and the Ohio Department of Youth Services commissioned the other probe. The Law Center advocates for the rights of children. It began investigating last fall after Assistant Ohio Public Defender Jill Beehler outlined allegations that girls at the prison made to lawyers helping them with their criminal cases. Beehler said many of the complaints involved abuses by male guards. Youth Services hired an independent investigator in January after receiving a letter from the Law Center. Youth Services Chief of Staff Kevin Miller says the department is taking the concerns seriously.
