12 Investigates: State Police take on 12 year old Cold Case

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) -

A 12 investigates exclusive: We broke the news police had finally identified skeletal remains found in 2001 on the Mattaponi River. Tonight we sit down with the state police special agents tasked with solving a 12 year old murder mystery.

Her skeleton washed up in the Mattaponi River in June of 2000 and sat in a box for 12 years in the medical examiners office. Modern science finally identified her: Brenda Gee Knight from Church Hill in Richmond. She was murdered and her killer is still out there.

"They've got a 12 year head start," said Special Agent Doc Lyons. He and Special Agent Angie Witt have the daunting job of piecing together a dozen years of empty leads.

"It's a big city out there. It's a big world out there and there has to be somebody that knows something," said Lyons.

"We didn't find her remains until June 29 2001. So that's a big time frame were we need to put the pieces together," added Special Agent Angie Witt.

Brenda Gee Knight was last seen alive the day before Thanksgiving in 2000. Her sister dropped her off on Jeff Davis Highway near the Satellite Restaurant. At the time she was prostituting.

Seven months later her skeletal remains, clothing, boots and a bracelet were found in the Mattaponi River.

"We're just trying to find out if anyone saw her. Who they saw her with. Did she make any statements to anyone? Was she afraid of anyone?," said Lyons.

Brenda Gee was taken from her daughters. At the time of her murder they just 1, 3 and 9 years old.

"I'm only 21, but I think about my sisters a lot, because they never really got the chance to know her. Somebody took her away from them," said Diamond Gee.

Police only need that one phone call to crack this cold case.

"The right lead, the right information. Rachel: Somebody out there... Angie: Somebody knows what happened," said Agent Witt.

Brenda Gee Knight grew up in Church Hill, she went to Armstrong High. She also cut and styled hair. If you have any information that can help. The number to call is (804)-553-3408. You can remain anonymous.
