Jodi Arias in court Tuesday afternoon as her sex tape was played for the jury.
A sex tape between Jodi Arias and the man she's accused of murdering was played in the courtroom Tuesday afternoon.
Arias, on trial for the murder of her ex-boyfriend Travis Alexander, could be seen tearing up at times while the audio tape played for a full courtroom. Arias' dad and brother chose not to be in the courtroom as the sex tape was played. Both families were warned not to show any reaction in front of the jury while listening to the graphic phone call.
Jurors and some members of both families listened as Alexander and Arias talked for over a half hour, sometimes about travel or superhero movies, but mostly about graphic sex acts.
Both Alexander and Arias made suggestions on the tape of sexual acts they wanted to perform together and some they'd already done. The tape was made less than a month before Alexander was killed.
As it played, Arias covered her face with her hands and hair and appeared to be crying.
Arias also testified about a time a couple weeks prior to the sex tape in April 2--8 when she said Alexander became physically violent.
On Tuesday morning, Arias walked into court apparently distraught as she appeared to have been crying.
This was moments after people in the courtroom heard that the phone sex conversation between Arias and Alexander would be played in court.
Judge Sherry Stephens abruptly called a recess before the morning session and thanked the jury and those in Maricopa County Superior Court for their patience in awaiting the day's testimony to start, but then said the court needed to attend to "another matter" before adjourning just before 11:30 a.m. and court resumed about 1:30 p.m.
Arias, charged with stabbing, shooting and slitting the throat of Alexander in Mesa, told jurors Monday she once awoke to find the victim having sex with her.
Arias faces the death penalty if convicted of first-degree murder in the killing of Alexander. Arias is scheduled to continue her testimony at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Maricopa County Superior Court.
Arias said she woke on a spring morning in 2007 to find Alexander "on top of her" and having sexual intercourse. She testified that she felt partly responsible for the act because she might have "invited" it by being in his bed. She also said they had engaged in other sexual acts prior to having intercourse for the first time.
She said that by the time of this incident, she was already in love with Alexander, though she admitted she never told him.
She said she squirmed from under him because of his weight and he forced her under the covers to continue sexual acts.
Arias said she learned that Alexander was "cheating" on her while on a vacation to New York and that she was miserable on the trip, although she admitted to not appearing miserable in photographs of the vacation.
She said that on a later trip to Disneyland in California she didn't feel "the magic" in the relationship she felt previously and broke off their relationship June 29, 2007.
Arias told the jury about explicit sexual fantasies she said Alexander had. She claimed he asked her to wear little boys' Spider-Man underwear while they were intimate and she believed Alexander had a sexual interest in children. Arias also testified that Alexander abused her.
When questioned why she didn't report the alleged abuse, she said she didn't want to betray him.
Arias testified last week in Phoenix about the volatile relationship that culminated with her killing Alexander after a lust-filled day of sex and raunchy photographs in June 2008.
