Victim identified in La Vergne trailer fire

City officials in La Vergne have released the identify of a person killed in a trailer fire on Monday.

Melinda Edwards, 46, died at a property in the 300 block of Old Nashville Highway around 6:30 a.m.

No information is available about the specific cause of her death, according to a news release.

"It's just awful," said neighbor LaDonna Seals.

Seals said she didn't know anyone even lived in the trailer that caught fire and killed Edwards.

"I just saw the smoke and them trying to get in and everything like that," Seals said.

La Vergne first responders tried desperately to reach the woman, but were unsuccessful.

"Our first officer reported on the scene it was a very heavy fire," said Kathy Tyson, spokeswoman for the city of La Vergne.

The trailer sits behind another home on the property next to Seals' property. A man who lives in that other home realized the trailer was on fire and suffered injuries in the smoke and flames when he tried to go inside for his mother.

The state fire marshal is now investigating the cause of the fire.
