(RNN) - For some, a good Valentine's Day is just another good day in a whole string of dreamy walks in the park and love-filled sunsets.
For others on the verge of being shown the door, a memorable Valentine's Day date may help ensure that your beloved is still willing to talk to you next year, or even next month.
If your date-night routine has fallen into a rut, a sense of adventure can help make Valentine's a day to remember.
Fast food and comfort food
Some people really love hashbrowns. Some people really love people who really love hashbrowns. For those people, Waffle House may be their little slice of heaven, with their choice of bacon or sausage, plain or raisin toast.
As usual, with the purchase of a dozen Valentine doughnuts, Krispy Kreme is offering a dozen Valentine cards, each good for a free donut.
Donut titan Dunkin Donuts is also offering heart-shaped donuts, and Papa Murphy's is selling the Heartbaker, which you can bake at home for a quiet Valentine's Day of board games.
Remember that February is American Heart Month and, instead of partaking in chocolates, artery-clogging food and watching a glowing screen, couples can spend time working out together. Nothing says love more than supporting your beloved as he or she works to attain health goals, right?
Whether it's at the gym, during a lunchtime walk or via a living room workout DVD, you can get your heart rate up with the one who gets your heart racing - provided, of course, that you both have reached such a level of comfort in your relationship that the thought of seeing each other in sweat-drenched workout gear doesn't fill you both with panic.
Sometimes, one must look at a glowing screen to see a beloved on Valentine's Day, particularly if said beloved is far away. Skype, an free online video and voice chat service, helps couples attain a level of intimacy poor Manti Te'o never achieved with Lennay Kekua.
Though you may not be able to hold hands on Valentine's Day, it doesn't mean you can't share your feelings. Once you have your beloved on the screen, just chat. Chat about anything. Share a virtual toast. Sing. Read poetry. Say sweet nothings to the screen.
Don't be afraid of being cheesy. It's Valentine's Day, after all, one of the cheesiest holidays of the year.
Are you in a town with an observatory? Star-watching can be a welcome break from the ordinary "dinner and a movie" date routine.
Some observatories, such as the Cincinnati Observatory, are even holding special events on Valentine's night though, alas, the Cincinnati Observatory's event is sold out.
A more low-tech option is a backyard telescope. If you're lucky enough to live far enough away from a metropolitan area that light pollution isn't a problem, you'll be able to bond by trying to identify the stars and constellations.
If not, the two of you are just going to be stuck studying the craters of the moon, which really isn't a bad way to spend time together.
Some of the fundamentalist couples among us likely will not celebrate Valentine's Day at all, instead observing the tenth annual Day of Purity Feb. 14.
The purity-fest is a project of the Liberty Counsel, a nonprofit right-wing group that invites "youth of all ages" to heed the call of purity, eschew notions of modern sexuality and wear white to symbolize a commitment "to remain sexually pure, in mind and actions" and "return to God's plan for intimacy and oneness."
Taking someone to a local cemetery on Valentine's seems a little bit Goth and creepy, or may even bring back teenage angst-ridden memories of writing romantic sonnets on the shortness of life, black fingernail polish and that mopey vampire with a soul, Angel from "Buffy the Vampire Slayer."
While a visit to an ordinary cemetery may be a less than stellar date option for everyone except the most Goth of valentines, exceptions would include a trip to Saint Louis Cemetery in New Orleans to see the above-ground graves of luminaries such as the voodoo queen Marie Laveau and chess champion Paul Morphy. The cemetery was also the site of a memorable scene in the movie "Easy Rider."
You could also visit Elvis' grave at Graceland, as well as the rest of Graceland, because to true Elvis fans, there is no bad day to pay their respects to the King, crooner of many a romantic ballad.
Forest Lawn Memorial Parks, the last resting place for stars and heartthrobs, is also an above-par site for romantics to visit if you happen to be in the LA area. More than your average cemetery, the grounds in Glendale, CA, includes a museum and often feature community events.
However, a picnic lunch near a gravesite is pretty tacky and is not recommended, unless perhaps you want to avoid the whole Valentine's Day hassle next year by being dumped this year. And you don't mind being kicked off the premises by the groundskeeper.
