The most extensive manhunt in Southern California history appears to have come to an end. It is believed that Christopher Dorner, the ex-cop turned suspected cop killer, died in a cabin near Big Bear, California.
Sources tell CBS News that Christopher Dorner's body is inside the burned out cabin near Big Bear, California. Police can not yet identify the body, but they do believe Dorner was inside when the cabin caught fire. Police had the cabin surrounded at the time.
Police picked up Dorner's trail Tuesday while investigating a carjacking.
"Christopher Dorner stepped in front of my truck," said carjacking victim Richard Heltebrake. "He stopped me at gunpoint. He said, 'I don't want to hurt you. Just get out, start walking up the road and take your dog with you.'"
Police followed the suspect matching Dorner's description to a nearby cabin and that's when the person inside opened fire.
Two police officers were hit. One is now dead and the other wounded.
Officials focused their search on the Big Bear area after police found his pickup truck burning in the woods near here last week.
Police went door-to-door searching cabins for the suspect. But CBS New has learned Dorner didn't get very far from where his truck was found.
Dorner is believed to have killed four people since February 3. He posted a manifesto on Facebook where he claimed he was seeking revenge for being fired from the LAPD.
Police were providing around-the-clock security for more than 50 families of police officers targeted in Dorner's manifesto.@
It is believed Dorner held two people hostage in the original cabin where he was hiding out.
