Poll: No Bounce For Democrats

Polling shows minimal bounce from convention

New polling indicates Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry won only minimal help at best from his party's national convention. A CNN USA Today-Gallup survey released today found the Democratic ticket of Kerry and John Edwards actually lost ground among likely voters following the convention -- going from what was essentially a dead heat to trailing President Bush and Vice President Cheney 50 percent to 46 percent.

The Democrats held a slight lead among registered voters. USA Today reports that while the change was within the poll's four-point error margin, it was the the first time in more than 30 years that Gallup showed a candidate losing ground following his party's convention.

An earlier Newsweek poll showed Kerry leading Bush 49 percent to 42 percent, but it pegged the Democrat's convention "bounce" at only four points -- the smallest in the history of that poll. That survey had a three-point margin of error.
