HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) -
The National Weather Service (NWS) has extended a wind advisory for the Hawaiian Islands through Tuesday evening.
Forecasters now say the wind advisory is in effect until at least 6 p.m. Tuesday.
Strong sustained easterly trade winds of 20 to 35 miles per hour can be expected, along with localized gusts of 50miles per hour.
The strong winds can bring down tree branches and make driving difficult, especially in high-profile vehicles such as SUVs. Motorists should use extra caution, especially while driving on bridges and overpasses.
Kauai police say a 54-year-old Kalaheo woman suffered injuries to her ankle when a tree fell on her Saturday in the parking area of a golf course.
The strong winds can still cause localized power outages.
Strong and sprawling high pressure developing far to the north of the islands is responsible for the strong trade winds. There's a chance the winds could get even stronger mid-week.
Weather Service Data:
Max Gusts in 24-hour period
Lihue Airport, Kauai - 36 mph
Kekaha / Barking Sands, Kauai - 25 mph
Honolulu International, Oahu - 38 mph

Kahului Airport, Maui - 43 mph
Lahaina / West Maui, Maui - 55mph
Molokai Airport, Molokai - 49 mph
Lanai City Airport, Lanai - 58 mph
Hilo International, Big Island -29 mph
For mariners, a Gale Warning is posted for the windiest marine zones around Maui County and the Big Island of Hawaii, with a small craft advisory for remaining Hawaiian near coastal waters, due to the strong winds. A Gale Warning is also posted for Hawaiian waters 40 to 240 nautical miles from the islands, including waters around the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument east of French Frigate Shoals.
The winds also have created rough and choppy surf for east-facing shores, where a high surf advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.
