HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -
It is already illegal to smoke in bars and restaurants in Connecticut, and a controversial bill would extend that ban to vehicles carrying small children.
A bill that would make it illegal for adults to smoke in a car carrying children six years old and younger will be presented before the state's transportation committee Wednesday.
Supporters say the bill is needed to hold adults accountable for the health of the children.
Rep. Henry Genga decided to introduce the bill after one his constituents, a 10-year-old boy, brought it to his attention. Genga said in his research he found there was real need to protect children from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke.
If the bill passes into law, adults found in violation would first be issued a warning and then a infraction similar to a traffic ticket.
