Class helps cancer patients look, feel their best

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

Patients fighting cancer took part in a free makeover Wednesday to help them look their best.

Vanderbilt Breast Cancer Center led a class on hair and makeup tips for women battling the disease. It is part of the "Look Good…Feel Better" program by the American Cancer Society.

In addition to hair loss, chemotherapy can also cause skin rashes and other problems, so experts gave advice on how makeup, wigs and scarves can help hide some of those side effects.

"It's very important to find other people who are dealing with the same issues you are. Everybody can be helpful, but until you go through it, you don't know what it's like to have the changes from chemotherapy," said participant Pat Gideon.

The class is offered the third Wednesday of every month at the Vanderbilt Health One Hundred Oaks campus on Thompson Lane. Participants receive a free supply of cosmetics matched to their skin tone, and lunch is also provided.
