HARTFORD, CT (WFSB) -

Gov. Dannel Malloy said the Sandy Hook Advisory Commission heard from experts in the field of student support and school crisis response.

The 16-member panel was created by Malloy in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown where 20 children and six adults were shot and killed by Adam Lanza.

At the Legislative Office Building in Hartford Friday, the panel also heard from doctors with experience in psychology and trauma services.

"What we really know is that the trauma and the after effects of the trauma, we're just beginning to see that now," said Department of Children and Families Commissioner Joette Katz.

Via Skype, John Barry, who is the superintendent of schools in Aurora, CO, addressed the commission.

On July 20, 2012, there was a movie theater mass shooting that took 12 lives and left 58 others wounded. Many students and staff from the school district were there.

"Our worst nightmare was the holiday season where people missed their loved ones, or reflected back on the circumstance," said

The panel is in charge of reviewing current policy and making specific recommendations in the areas of public safety, with particular attention paid to school safety, mental health and gun violence prevention.

On Thursday, Gov. Dannel P. Malloy outlined five primary areas where he said the state can strengthen gun control laws, including:

  • Making background checks universal and comprehensive.
  • Banning large-capacity magazines
  • Strengthening the assault weapons ban
  • Promoting safer gun storage
  • Improving enforcement of existing laws

"I think he was just taking his role as governor as he should and taking as much leadership as he can," said Bernine Sullivan, who is the co-chairman of the task force.

Eyewitness News asked if the governor's announcement rendered what the commission was doing as inert in any way.

"No, because we can either reinforce what he did, we can add to what he did," Sullivan said.

According to Sullivan, the governor said the task force's recommendations are expected by March 15. However, the date is flexible.
