Rutherford Co. group calls for more gun control

MURFREESBORO, TN (WSMV) -

A group of voters in Rutherford County is trying to raise awareness about gun violence by holding what it calls a "Day of Action" to get the attention of lawmakers.

The event started Friday with a letter-writing campaign at the county's Democratic Party headquarters.

It's an especially personal topic for Rebekah Majors-Manley, whose sister, Lisa, was the victim of gun violence two years ago.

"I feel like by telling her story I am still standing up for her and all the Lisas of the world to make a difference," Majors-Manley said.

The group is calling for a ban on assault-style weapons and high-capacity ammunition clips, and many of the letters were addressed to Republican U.S. Rep. Scott DesJarlais.

The group delivered the letters to his office in Murfreesboro and a few members held a candlelight vigil outside the office Friday evening.

A spokesman for the congressman said DesJarlais has traveled across the district, and the voters "have given him a clear message that they want him to go to Washington and protect their Second Amendment rights."
