Golden Retriever spreads joy at retirement community

Workers at the Cedar Village Retirement Community say they have seen some amazing turnarounds with patients since a dog started making his rounds.

Gates, a five-year-old Golden Retriever, is a permanent resident at Cedar Village. Gates is not just a therapy dog, but a part of the Cedar Village family.

"Sometimes people are slumped back in their wheelchairs, they're not feeling good," said Debi Tyler, Director of Rehabilitation. "They're in a lot of pain and when [Gates] comes up towards them they sit up straight they reach forward to pat him."

Gertie Dock was glued to chairs until she met Gates.

"All of the sudden I got up and I was walking with him," said Dock.

Cedar Village also hosts the first elder abuse shelter in the Midwest and that's where Gates may make the biggest impact.

Gates was a rescue dog from Circle Tail, Inc. To see how their dogs are trained and by whom tune into FOX 19 Monday and Tuesday morning for more on the organization.
