WINTON WOODS, OH (FOX19) -

The Hamilton County Parks District provided people a chance to learn what it takes to survive a winter in the wild at the 2013 Winter Challenge.

Outdoorsmen gathered at Winton Woods on Saturday afternoon to learn skills and survival techniques for surviving a winter in the woods. Skills taught at the event included primitive fire making techniques, locating and purifying water, building a shelter, signaling for help, cooking over a fire and basic first aid.

To get the full experience, patrons were invited to stay overnight at Winton Wood's Adventure Outpost. Many camped out in frigid conditions. Others opted to stay in basic cabins nearby.

Early Sunday morning, participants were awoken to smells of cooked rabbit. After breakfast, participants took part in survival challenges to test their skills from the night before.
