Snowstorm brings business for repair shops

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Dashing through the snow may not be a great idea in the metro. There is a danger hiding under the slush, and it is causing a bump in business at local auto shops.

Most of the cars coming into Hendrick Collision Center in Kansas City have front bumper and undercarriage damage, caused by simply trying to get out of their neighborhoods.

Collision repair specialist say it only takes about four inches of snow to do serious damage to a car, which can cost drivers thousands of dollars to repair. And speeding up to crash through the snow isn't going to help.

"Never a good idea. A lot of times when you try to do that you'll crack your bumper. What is sitting under that is a radiator, and if your damage that radiator, your fluids leak out, and you are really in trouble then. So you don't want to ram into anything. That is not what cars are made for," collision repair specialists Gary Watts said.

Watts recommends taking out the shovel and scooping the mounds of snow out of the way to navigate through the blocked streets.
