Car hits trooper while investigating crash in southwestern OH

FRANKLIN, OH (Toledo News Now) -
An Ohio State Highway Patrol trooper is still in the hospital after being struck by a vehicle on an interstate in southwestern Ohio late Wednesday night.
The OSHP is investigating a serious injury crash involving a trooper assigned to the Lebanon Post. The crash occurred on Interstate 75 near milepost 36 in Warren County shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday.
Newly commissioned trooper, Brent Hill, 26, and his field training officer, Mike Steele, 48, both of the Lebanon Post, were on the scene of a one-vehicle crash on the left berm of I-75 northbound. Hill was out of the patrol car investigating the initial crash when he was struck by another vehicle that had lost control on the snowy roadway. Andrew Combs, 22, of Vandalia, OH, was driving a Buick Riviera when he lost control, went off the left side of the roadway, sideswiped the patrol car and struck Hill, along with the vehicle that was involved in the first crash.
The initial crash occurred when Victoria Zaagman, 20, of West Chester, OH, lost control of her Dodge Neon while traveling northbound on I-75. Her vehicle went off the left side of the roadway and struck the cement median wall.
Zaagman was subsequently arrested for failure to maintain reasonable control and for operating a vehicle after underage consumption. Authorities found her blood alcohol content to be .049.
Zaagman and her passenger, Hanna Cox, 19, also of West Chester, were not injured although the vehicle sustained disabling damage.
There were no passengers in Combs' vehicle.
No other injuries were reported.
Trooper Hill was transported from the scene with critical injuries to a hospital in Middletown, before being transported to a trauma center in Dayton. According to OSHP, he is still in critical condition but has been upgraded to stable.
Combs remained at the scene and provided a statement to investigators. He was cooperative with the investigation and was released pending further investigation.
The crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time.
