Concert planned in memory of Newtown families

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

The Concert for Healing in the Heart of Newtown is providing area musicians a way to come together to help the families directly affected by the Sandy Hook tragedy.

Organizers told Eyewitness News that they had so many musicians contacting them wanting to be on this stage for this benefit concert they actually had to shut it down there wasn't enough space for everybody.

However, a Sandy Hook father will be getting the chance to play from the heart this weekend.

Mark Barden is a professional musician and teacher as well as a husband and father and now, he is passing along this lifelong love.

"It's hard to get out and play," he said sitting playing in his home studio Friday. "Going out and putting on a smile and entertaining people for four or five hours, I don't think I could do that, I just don't."

Mark's youngest son, Daniel Barden, was one of the 20 students killed inside Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14. Six teachers and staff members were also killed that day.

"It feels like every minute that elapses is another minute that I'm really farther away from my sweet little Daniel," Mark Barden said.

This weekend Mark Barden has been asked to perform at the benefit concert where he will play with musicians that include former Yankee Bernie Williams. The concert will feature jazz, rock, folk, rhythm and blues, country, and Celtic music.

All the proceeds are going to the Sandy Hook Family Fund.

Something that has helped this family over the past two months and the Bardens know they'll continue to need for months to come.

"I feel grateful to be able to participate and be able to give back to some of the other families," Mark Barden said.

The concert will be held on Sunday from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and 4 to 5:30 p.m. The price of admission is $15.
