Potential budgets cuts coming to Phoenix PD have some worried

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Some members of the Phoenix Police Department are up in arms Thursday over some proposed budget cuts. These cuts include getting rid of exercising on duty and take-home vehicles.

A source within the department tells us Phoenix Police Chief Daniel Garcia released a video for employees only talking about these proposals to save money. So far, they don't seem to be sitting well.

If you log onto the Phoenix Law Enforcement Association's website, you'll see they're not too happy about some budget reductions the department may be implementing.

For example, officers who don't live in Phoenix may have to say goodbye to their take-home cars. They may be able to park your car at city limits, though we're not sure yet where. If they're currently allowed to exercise on duty, they may have to say goodbye to that, too, unless they are a member of SWAT.

PLEA said the chief claims this will add 20 patrol jobs, but they're not seeing any actual dollar amount saved. Also, many employees currently work four ten-hour shifts a week. But police may start a pilot program at the Estrella Mountain precinct, adding five eight-hour days to the mix. PLEA again questioned how that will save money.

Back in November, we told you of some concerns after the city manager got a raise but the rank-and-file employees were only getting a portion of their raises back. Some cops tell CBS 5 News this will only cause more rifts within the department.

We asked both the department and city officials about the changes, and how much money they would save. Phoenix police confirmed the proposals; Sgt. Trent Crump also said, "The 5/8 schedule is a pilot program to analyze its efficiency. There are a number of other proposals on the table. We will provide additional information tomorrow."
