BERLIN, CT (WFSB) -

Officials with Connecticut Light & Power told Eyewitness News that the majority of outages are being seen in lower Connecticut River Valley.

More than a foot of snow has fallen in several locations and all the weight from the snow coupled with strong winds is bringing down utility wires as well as bringing down large tree limbs.

According to the CL&P website, 1,290 or less than 1 percent of utility customers remained in the dark at 7 p.m.

At the peak of the storm, there were about 13,000 customers without power.

CL&P said it is sending extra crews to that lower Connecticut River Valley area, specifically Killingworth and Clinton. At one point, nearly 70 percent of Essex was without power.

"Very sick of it," Ed Green, of Essex, said about losing power after recent storms. "We haven't lost power this much in 10 years."

Many businesses such as Bennies Farm Market in Centerbrook were forced to turn customers away and send employees home.

"We sent our chef home so that puts us behind in pot pie making and salad prep and baking," said Karl Kulisch of Bennies Farm Market.

Over at Essex Hardware, while they couldn't keep the lights on, the door was open. Jay Tonks said they got by the old fashioned way.

"Writing things on paper, taking credit card numbers down and when the power comes back on we'll ring them through," he said.

Tanger Outlets Mall in Westbrook closed early Friday.

The United Illuminating Company has 279 reported outages as of 5:30 p.m.

Both CL&P and UI officials said they have their outside-of-company workers on standby in case extra help is needed.

Officials with CL&P said they currently have enough crews in-state to deal with the outages.
