Veterans Bush, Kerry campaigns battle over veterans vote
Political analysts said today that Vice President Dick Cheney's appearance before Ohio veterans later this week may be an effort by Republicans to reinforce their support with a key voting group in a battleground state. Herb Asher, political science professor at Ohio State University, says Republicans are also trying to lessen the success that John Kerry has among veterans because of his Vietnam-War experience or perceptions that the current war in Iraq was not well handled. In Ohio, there are about one-point-one million military veterans. Cheney will talk about the war on terrorism when he addresses veterans Thursday at the Dayton Convention Center.
Next week, both President Bush and Kerry will come to Cincinnati for the national convention of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
