EDGEWOOD, Ky. (March 13, 2013) – After a one-year hiatus, the 30th edition of the annual Northern Kentucky Football Coaches Association (NKFCA) East-West All-Star Game returns as part of a new week-long celebration of the area's top high school football seniors.
The inaugural June 2-6 Snappy Tomato Pizza Northern Kentucky All-Star Week presented by NovaCare/UC Health, which includes a number of special events for participants, culminates with select seniors from 20 schools competing against each other in the East-West Game.
Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at Dixie Heights High School.
The most noticeable change – made possible by event partners Snappy Tomato Pizza, NovaCare and UC Health – is an increase in scholarship monies awarded to student-athletes from the participating schools. In all, a total of $15,000 (or $750 per award) will be given to a member of each school's football team to use toward furthering their education in college.
Other Northern Kentucky All-Star Week highlights include:
Honorary coaches for both teams will be announced in May.
Special appearances at team practices by former NFL and college standouts.
Game to feature interactive elements designed to enhance the fan experience.
Retail contests leading up to kickoff at participating Snappy Tomato Pizza outlets.
The NKFCA recently entered a partnership with In-Game Sports, the Northern Kentucky-based sports marketing, promotion and event management company that owns and operates the Skyline Chili Crosstown, the nation's premier high school football showcase, and also manages the second Reds Futures High School Showcase – a season-opening prep baseball event.
"We are thrilled to take the event to the next level," said NKFCA President Dave Wirth, who is also Covington Catholic's head coach. "Many of our member schools have participated in and had a tremendous experience in the incredibly successful Showdown, and we look forward to a similar experience for our all-stars, their families and our communities with this partnership.
"Furthermore, we are even more pleased with the continued commitment and expansion of the college scholarships awarded annually by the NKFCA as a result of this game's proceeds."
Seniors from Bellevue, Bishop Brossart, Campbell County, Covington Catholic, Dayton, Dixie Heights, Highlands, Holmes, Newport and Newport Central Catholic comprise the East team. First-year Bellevue coach Johnny Poynter and Dave Brossart of Dixie Heights are co-coaches.
The West squad comprises Beechwood, Boone County, Conner, Cooper, Holy Cross, Lloyd, Ludlow, Ryle, Scott and Simon Kenton. Bruce Kozerski of Holy Cross and Jeff Marksberry from Simon Kenton will work together as co-coaches of the West.
