Titans release QB Matt Hasselbeck

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

The Tennessee Titans have released quarterback Matt Hasselbeck after two seasons. The move Monday allowed the team some more cap space after they couldn't work out an agreement trimming his $5.5 million salary for 2013.

Hasselbeck, 37, had joined the Titans in July 2011 after several years with the Seattle Seahawks, and in 2011 he lead the Titans to a 9-7 record, narrowly missing the playoffs in his first season with the team.

Hasselbeck began the 2012 season as a backup to starter Jake Locker, but after Locker was injured early in the year, Hasselbeck took over the starting job.

Titans General Manager Ruston Webster said in a statement Monday:

"I want to thank Matt for his contributions to our team over the last two years. He was an important part of the transition process. He was a pro at every turn, and he provided an example to the rest of the team. I know that we are a better team for his being here and we wish him the best."

In 2011, Hasselbeck passed for 3,571 yards - the fourth-highest passing total in franchise history and the third-highest of his career - with 18 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

Then - with appearances in eight games, including five starts in 2012 - Hasselbeck passed for 1,367 yards and seven touchdowns in 2012.

Overall, Hasselbeck has 14 years of NFL experience and has thrown for 34,517 yards and 201 touchdowns during his career.

ESPN reported Monday evening the Titans will sign former Buffalo Bills quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to a two-year contract.

Fitzpatrick, 30, signed an extension with the Bills in 2011 but wasn't productive. Overall, he went 20-33 in the four seasons he played with the Bills.
