Merco Press reports that the average Swedish person ate 87 kilos of meat last year, mainly beef and veal. According to the Merco Press, Marit Paulsen, vice president of the European Parliament’s agriculture committee, says she thinks Swedish meat consumption should be halved to about 45-50 kilos per year because of the environmental impact. To achieve this, Swedish officials are proposing a meat consumption tax.
Though the specifics are vague, Justin Maas, Yumi Media representative, says a meat tax could benefit other countries by encouraging the reduction of meat consumption. This would be healthier and help the environment, he says. “Meat, if consumed in small amounts, can be part of a healthy diet,” Maas says. “However, people today tend to consume much more than is necessary, nutritionally speaking. This is simply not sustainable.”
Maas says as people cut down on meat, they should look into incorporating meatless products. “Quorn's meat-alternative products can fit into a food lovers diet, replacing meat altogether.”
Maas adds that Quorn complaints are overshadowed by the recent horsemeat scandal. “Quorn products are made from natural ingredients, have a great taste and are a similar consistency to meat. By increasing the consumption of plant-based foods, people will be able to maintain a healthier diet and promote sustainability without sacrificing great taste.”
