Authorities have called off the search for a father and daughter who jumped off the Bond Bridge into the frigid waters of the Missouri River. They are presumed to have died.
Witnesses told police that they saw a man and woman park a vehicle on the Bond Bridge. Both stepped over the railing, hugged and then jumped.
A witness told police that the woman appeared to be holding a blanket in a way that made her think the woman was possibly carrying a child.
However, police later determined that no baby was involved. Police and friends believe the woman was holding her dog, who was her faithful companion.
The incident resulted in Interstate 35 in both directions being shut down for a time. Traffic remains slow on the highway and motorists are urged to avoid the area.
The woman who saw the man and woman jump was upset when she called 911. After she calmed down, police were able to get additional details from her as well as other witnesses.
Their gold vehicle has been found that the two apparently used to reach the bridge area. The vehicle has been towed.
Rescue crews launched boats, but found no sign of the jumpers. Authorities haven't said what might have led the father and daughter to commit suicide.
Detectives are working to identify them and speak with those who knew them.
